so speaker boehner knows a caucus, a serious, mature sober leader. he knows what his principles are. he's a principled conservative, a mainstream businessman and knows what the issues are. the house should and is largely trusting him. >> and what do you think about that, hilary? should the democrats trust the president to close the deal behind closed doors? >> i think democrats mostly trust the president. i don't know what mary's talking about that the president has dragged his heels. he's been trying to get congress to deal with this issue for months and months. but having said that, neither of these guys i think have the full faith and credit of their caucuses to do anything and that's what is taking so long. no democrats are pressing on the president to be careful on what he cuts on entitlements and folks like me would like to make sure that the defense cuts, you know, are substantially a part of this package. republicans, you know, are making a big deal out of that top 2% tax rate and so they both, i think, have a good sense of how far they can g

he said, of his meeting with speaker boehner, "i think the tone was good. i believe both speaker boehner and myself and the other leaders want to see a deal happen." but diane, he did warn that the clock is ticking. >> it is for sure. and i know you're going to have more of this interview, we'll all be watching, tomorrow morning on "gma," tonight on "nightline" and the full interview with the president and with mrs. obama will be airing on a special edition of "20/20" on friday night. >>> and, by the way, on that question of the fiscal cliff, i had an extraordinary conversation today in washington, as well. with a group of people who are making history. it has taken 224 years, but for the first time, a record 20 women will be serving in the united states senate. and today, many of them gathered with me and some of them said women do lead in a different way. and women would have already brokered that deal on the fiscal cliff. >> i think, if we were in charge of the senate, and of the administration, that we would have a budget deal by now. >> reporter: do yo

john boehner's got to make a decision. is he going to put a majority of members on an agreement, democrats and republicans together, or will he bring nothing to the floor unless he has a majority of republicans? if it's the latter, it's going to be harder to get to a deal. he can take 150 democrats and 75 or 80 or 90 republicans and get a deal more quickly than he can take a majority of his caucus. and that's really his role in leadership, what's he going to do there. i heard you talking about the "lincoln" movie a while ago. that's the kind of leadership speaker boehner will need to show, and i think he eventually will. it's less a fiscal cliff than it is a slide or an incline plane or whatever. but i think that, you know, soon after the 1st, if we haven't done it by then when all the tax rates go and all the changes happen, we get serious and something happens, and i think speaker boehner will be part of it. that's why i'm generally optimistic within the next month if not within the next few weeks. >> i hope so. senator

john boehner is really the only republican power in town. so a lot of people think that he's going to have to move toward the president. right now, he's showing absolutely no signs of that. but public opinion is definitely in the president's side. >> the president seems to be counting on here that if no deal is reached, the gop will get the blame from voters. is that the right calculation to make? >> absolutely. polls show that republicans would overwhelmingly be blamed if the united states goes over the proverbial fiscal cliff. and that's why president obama has an advantage, because he's willing -- he says, this is what he and his advisers say, he's willing to send the nation off of the fiscal cliff, letting all income tax rates to jump, spending cuts to take hold, investment income rates to jump. he's willing to do that. he thinks republicans would get the political blame. republicans, on the other hand, note that listen, the president's going to have to have another term where he's dealing with what's likely to be a deep recession as a r
